Understand the IFOM Exam Before You Regret!

This is important for every student who is going to appear or planning to give IFOM exam. The main aim to conduct IFOM is to check the basic & clinical science of examinees. This IFOM exam is conducted & maintained by NBME (National Board of Medical Examiners).NBME is the same organization that conducts USMLE. There are 3 assessments done in the IFOM exam, including the Basic and Clinical Science exams and a Clinical Science Self-Assessment.

The IFOM (International Foundations of Medicine) program allows you to evaluate your knowledge and compare your performance against examinees around the world.

Many medical schools and other organizations take this IFOM exam to select candidates for exchange and training programs, award regional and national certifications, and prepare students for the USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 Clinical Knowledge exams. NBME conducts this exam twice in a Year.

The IFOM program is comprised of three tests, which include the Basic and Clinical Science exams and Clinical Science Self-Assessment.

Students can give IFOM exam practice papers on their websites. In every practice, a paper student has to appear for 20 questions. Practice link available for both IFOM exam Basic Science examination & Clinical Science Examination.

1.Basic Science examination

This exam is conducted to check basic medical science knowledge of examinees. A student has to attempt 160 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) in 4 hours. The following content areas are covered in Basic Science examination

  • Anatomy

  • Biochemistry

  • Histology and Cell Biology

  • Microbiology

  • Organ Systems

  • Pathology

  • Pharmacology

  • Physiology

2.Clinical Science Examination

This exam is conducted to check medical knowledge and understanding of clinical science. The student has to attempt 160 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) in 4 hours.The following content areas are covered in Clinical Science Examination

  • Family Medicine

  • Medicine

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology

  • Pediatrics

  • Psychiatry

  • Surgery

3.Clinical Science Self-Assessment

This exam is conducted to check your knowledge of the clinical sciences before appearing for the IFOM Clinical Science Exam. In the clinical science self-assessment exam students have to attempt 80 questions. This Clinical Science Self-Assessment covers the same content as the Clinical Science Exam.

How to Apply for IFOM

  1. Register for Exam on MYNBME Portal

  2. Pay IFOM exam fees, which include exam fees, eligibility verification, and seat time at the Prometric Test Center.

  3. Download status form and sent to your medical college

  4. The medical college will complete the form and sent to ECFMG(Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates)

  5. After your eligibility verify you will receive testing permit email.

  6. After receiving permit Email you need to select the test site by visiting Prometric website

Additional fees may be applicable for other services related to the IFOM examinations, i.e to shipping of paper examinations, translation services, or other special services, etc.

The organization can purchase vouchers for the IFOM Clinical Science Self-Assessment for distribution to students or other examinees.

Language of Exam

Individually this exam is conducted in the English language. The IFOM test center is available in 50 countries.

If any Institution or organization wants to implement the IFOM exam for their institution then the student can give IFOM exam in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Basic Science Exam and Clinical Science Self-Assessment exams are available in English and Spanish. Clinical Science Exam is available in English, Spanish and Portuguese language.

Passing Score of IFOM exam

NBME does not set a minimum passing score for the IFOM examinations because this exam is conducted for different purposes by different healthcare and educational institute around the world.
