I enjoyed reading it, and trust me I know it sounds weird because no one likes pharma in medschool.
I'll give the way I prepared it.
Stick to one book. K.D.Tripathi to be precise. I know it seems too much at first. But it is necessary. KDT is best book for the concept building of pharma. It explains physiology first then explains the drugs modifying, inhibiting or facilitating physiology of the particular system.
Start with General Pharma First if possible. When I started for the first time I disliked general pharma so much. I had so many doubts. I went to a professor and cleared them out. Especially in Pharmacokinetics. When i could understand the chapters then it was easy.
Pharmacokinetics. Keep your concepts about t½, Tmax,Cmax, all the curves, Saturation kinetics very clear.
Pharmacodynamics. Read about receptors, agonist, antagonist, partial and full agonist,GPCRs.Know their examples as well.
Read definitions.
Teratogenic drugs. Remember the examples as well. It's important to know them because They can't be prescribed in pregnancy. One such example of teratogenic drug is Thalidomide~SealLimb Deformity~phacomelia. This one drug is a must know from teratogens.
For each system I Used to make notes. And then Revise Revise Revise. It sounds too much but it is the bitter truth about pharma that it is voletile.
Classification of drugs. This one thing should be on tip of Your fingers. This one is the basic question where most of the time viva starts. General Pharma can really help in opioid drugs classification. I still remember it was too cumbersome to recall in viva. Also, What to say about cephalosporin classification!! Even the spectrum changes from 1st generation to 5th generation drugs.Damn! :( Revision is the key here as well!
Endocrine System. I found it comparatively easy because most of it has got covered in physiology in first year.
Antidiabetic Drugs should be learned with doses and schedules. Like basal bolus and split mix insulin regimes.
SERMs,OCPs are very important.
Corticosteroids. Needless to say double edged sword drugs which requires too careful use in medicine should be read throuroughly.
Anabolic steroids are important as well
Thyroxine and anti thyroid drugs are must to do.
Antimicrobial agents. Very very very important section. One order should be made to remember them like
Group of drug
Spectrum
Mechanism Of action
Pharmacokinetics : especially in penicillin group where we can combine it with probenecid. Read to find out why in kdt :)
Adverse reactions
Particular agents. And particular drugs with specific actions.
More stress given on dosage schedule of the drugs given in common diseases like TB, Leprosy, Syphilis, Typhoid, Malaria, UTI, Diphtheria,STDs. These things are going to form your base in medicine.
Other systemic drugs can also be remembered as the format given above.
For the main drug as whole how to remember part: Read mechanism of action properly. You will get an idea about the Use and Adverse reaction of the drug very easily.
Some general points like Sulfa group of drugs cause Hypersensitivity are to be remembered.
Some drug of choices are important. Like in antimicrobials.
Antihypertensive treatment should be on tip of Your tongue as it forms a major part in clinical medicine as well. I would recommend to read Shaanbag first then read KDT for CVS part as it's a bit harder to understand
All and all You Have to work hard for pharmacology. It's not a cake walk. But it's necessary as well because what are you going to prescribe when the patient comes. :P This one thing kept me motivated throughout the year so that I could study Pharma.
At some point of preparation You will definitely start loving pharmacology because it's very much interesting. How a simple chemical compound can do wonders and give the patient comfort that he needs!!!
